Canvas for Parents: The Complete Guide (2026)

Everything parents need to know about Canvas: getting parent access, checking grades, finding missing work, setting up alerts, watching grade trends, and what to do when grades slip.

If your child's school uses Canvas, almost everything you want to know (grades, missing work, what's due, what the teacher posted) is already in it. The hard part is knowing where to look and what it means. This guide covers it all in order, with a link to a full step-by-step guide for each part.

What parents can see in Canvas

Parents use an observer account: a read-only Canvas login linked to one or more students. You can see their courses, grades, assignments and due dates, announcements and the course calendar. You can't submit work, take quizzes or change anything. Some settings, like whether a grade is visible yet, are up to the school and each teacher, so two classes may show different amounts of detail.

1. Get parent access

You need an observer account paired with each child, usually with a pairing code from your child's Canvas settings. You can sign up on the web or in the Canvas Parent app, and one account can follow several kids. Here's how to become an observer on Canvas, step by step, including fixes for pairing-code errors.

2. Check grades

On the web, the Dashboard's View Grades button lists every course's current grade, and each course's Grades page shows every assignment and how the total is calculated. In the Canvas Parent app, the Courses tab shows each class's grade. See how to check your child's grades in Canvas and, for the student side, how to see your grades on Canvas.

3. Find missing work, and know what it means

Missing assignments show a Missing label on each course's Grades page. Not every label is real: work handed in on paper or excused late can show as Missing too, and some classes enter a zero automatically. Start with how to see missing assignments on Canvas and what Missing means (and when it's a false alarm).

4. Set up alerts in the Canvas Parent app

In the Canvas Parent app, open the menu, choose Manage Students and tap your child. You can turn on alerts for missing assignments and announcements, and set grade thresholds so you hear when a course or assignment grade goes above or below a number you choose. Set the low threshold where it means something; too high and the alerts become noise. More in what the Canvas Parent app shows, and what it doesn't.

5. Watch the trend, not just the grade

Canvas shows today's grade, not how it got there. A class that went from 91 to 82 in two weeks needs attention more than one that has sat at 80 all term. Here's how to see a grade's history, and how to see the class average for an assignment when a score surprises you.

6. More than one kid, or different schools

One observer account covers every child on the same Canvas site, which is usually your whole district. Elementary, middle and high school teachers use Canvas very differently, though. Here's how to keep track of kids at different schools.

7. When grades slip

8. A routine that fits a real week

A two-minute look on school nights (what's due, anything new missing) and a ten-minute review on the weekend (zeros, grades that moved, the week ahead) catches nearly everything. The back-to-school Canvas checklist walks through setting it up.

Where Canvas falls short for parents

Canvas shows one kid at a time, one class at a time, and leaves the comparing to you. That's the gap we built GradeGlance for: every kid and every class on one screen, missing work and recent zeros counted, slipping grades flagged, and one check-in a day instead of a stream of alerts. Here's what it does for parents.
